Grey’s Anatomy began Thursday night with a bang. Now that Cristina Yang is no longer at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, a new surgeon has graced the hospital with her presence – Maggie Pierce who we had the pleasure of seeing at the end of season 10.

We also see Meredith confiding in Alex about her martial problems, he is reluctant at the start of the episode but at the end he gives advice to his only first year resident. Meanwhile, Owen is showing signs that he is struggling with the absence of Cristina, which April tries to get her nose into by making Jackson and the other male doctors befriend Owen again.

However, troubles tricks the hospital as Owen, Meredith and Maggie are awaiting a patient on the roof when a strong gust of wind picks up the gurney off the roof, but it lands on a parked jeep where two teens are having a romantic moment but are soon injured by the gurney. One of the injured is a patient who is going throwing chemo treatment, but his girlfriend is the one that gets it worse. This plot line plays a serious role in the story of Callie and Arizona’s feelings about losing control of their baby.

Richard Webber is having his own problems with Maggie possibly being his daughter from the result of a long term affair with Ellis Grey. There is some issue with Derek possibly leaving the hospital that can put some serious strain on his marriage with Meredith, but his sister Amelia is praying to take over the surgery residency.

Back to the patient that arrived via helicopter believes he was searching for his family in the desert for three days but it was closer to two-three months, but he starts hallucinating and needs surgery for his kidney and he has underlying heart condition. Here is where you see Meredith and Maggie butt heads with the elder sister getting her way.

Later on, Maggie barges into the ER and orders people around (remind you of anyone perhaps – Ellis, perhaps?). The kidney disappears for a moment, then it’s recovered and the heart is in working order once again. Meredith and Maggie have it out in the break room where neither sister backs down for Maggie doesn’t want to suck up to Meredith and Meredith refuse to be pushed around. Later, Richard talks with Maggie who reveals that she would much rather go home to her wonderful parents instead of some unwanted blood relatives. Ouch!!! Richard walks away dejected.

At the end Alex takes Meredith and steps in as her person and gives her advice. Meanwhile, there is still one board seat up for grabs which pits Bailey against Alex for the chair. The result requires a majority vote that Bailey had guessed correctly meaning that the result will be announced in a later episode.

At the end, Derek doesn’t take the job and stays in Seattle for no job is worth missing his kids lidless for. At the bar both Meredith and Maggie orders tequila.

All in all, not a bad first episode back for a Grey’s Anatomy, a little bit slow at the start but this season is going to be Meredith-centric which is hinted at the start with Meredith remembering her mum disappearing on her when she was little and being at the hospital. The character development that is shown between Alex and Meredith is good to see from season 1 to now is brilliant.

As usual, there are multiple storylines that are good to see develop and can’t wait to see in future episodes.

There are twenty-three episodes left in this season with the next four episodes being titled – “Puzzle With a Piece Missing” that will air on October 2nd, episode 3 “Got to Be Real”, episode 4 “Only Mama Knows” and episode 5 “Crime and Punishment”.
